DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Appleton Tracy & Co, model 1860, 16S, rare and heavy 18K original Baldwin & Co reversible case marked with 1858 Patent date inside the beautifully engraved inner surface of the latched lid, central case body pivots to put watch in either open face or hunting case form with the body released for pivoting by depressing pendant button while latched lid is open, KWKS, WE-SSD, lever escapement, 15J, gilt mvt, s#280624. Gross weight of assembled watch 84.6 dwt (131.6 g). Rare and very desirable early case, by pivoting on a 45 degree axis the Baldwin reversible case orients the watch with its pendant in the correct position for both open face and hunting case form.
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticking a bit sluggishly, OH recommended, excellent mvt condition overall, FS between edge steel disk around winding arbor and plate edge at end of word "Tracy," some mild cloud to gilt surfaces; dial very near perfect with only a faint hl above seconds-register and a very tiny rim nick at upper right of seconds-register; fine hands, rust at minute hand tip; case with medium wear to its open face orientation but with almost no wear to the lid that is exposed only when in hunting case form indicating that this watch was used nearly exclusively as an open face, typical MFS, no dents or dings, ET detail fully lost from open face side but with crisp ET remaining on hunting case side; bow pivots freely, push shows medium wear; good glass crystal.
